A Dinner Guest

“M

y friend Ember is coming for dinner tonight,” Lupine says, coming to sit next to me on the sofa. She looks tired. Not that I’m going to tell her that. It’s more than my life is worth. Especially considering I’ve added a lot of extra work to her already full schedule with the opening of Tilbury Manor.

I’d have been lost without her over the last few weeks. Today, we finally opened the manor and accepted our first couple of guests, an elderly couple and a young man. I struggled to leave the manor earlier, not completely sure that Leon and the others could handle everything without me. I wouldn’t be so worried if it wasn’t for the dragon shifter in room one.

“Ember?” I ask. In a small town like Silver Springs everyone knows each other and so it’s unusual for names not to sound familiar.

“She grew up here in the orphanage,” Lupine explains, her eyes fixed on Luna as she tries to roll over on her mat in the middle of the living room, “but she left as soon as she was old enough.”

“Why?” Rehan asks from where he’s sitting in the armchair by the window. Lupine doesn’t talk about her childhood in the orphanage often, and so I imagine he’s just as interested in this new bit of information as I am.

“She hated Silver Springs. I guess she couldn’t wait to leave.”

“Then why is she back?” I probably shouldn’t be asking. It’s not really any of my business. But I can’t really imagine anyone hating Silver Springs. As far as I can see, it’s a pretty brilliant place to live.

“She heard about the new ice rink. She’s always loved ice skating, not that she was very good at it when we were children.”

“She wasn’t?” Wren asks.

“Well… It’s not so much that she was bad at it, so much as she was always melting the ice.”

“Melting the ice?” I press.

“Yeah, she’s a fire Kitsune and fire and ice don’t really mix.”

There’s a gentle tap at the door and Lupine gets to her feet to go greet her old friend, just as Jacqueline calls loudly through the house, telling the children to go wash their hands before dinner. Kalen picks up Luna and follows Lupine out of the room, putting the baby down for her nap.

“Oh my goodness, Lupine! I can’t believe you actually STAYED!” A happy voice says from the doorway. “I’m so happy to see you.”

The two women embrace one another before Ember turns to look at us. “You’ll have to introduce me to this lot. They can’t possibly all be yours?”

Laughing, Lupine gives her a nod. “Yup, all mine.”

“Good on you, chick!” Ember grins before giving us all a quick wave. “Nice to meet you.”

“Enzo, Wren, Rehan and Camden,” Lupine says, pointing to us each in turn, “and I think Kalen is upstairs putting Luna down for her nap.”

“You have five mates?” Ember’s eyebrow shoots up. “Is that a Silver Springs thing? I’m pretty sure the woman who opens the bakery I went to earlier has several guys as well.
